Most of my projects lately have been for gifts, or cute little toys and knick knacks, so it was high time I make something that is a little more grown up.
I’m a true Etsy-holic, and some time ago, I found a cute pattern at Hectanooga on Etsy. Since I’m new to patterns, I was nervous about giving it a try, but I purchased it and soon realized that her patterns are the most user friendly I’ve come across so far. Seriously, Emi at Hectanooga on Etsy, knows how to speak, and write my language, the language of ease. That’s why I decided to buy her shrug pattern.
Here’s the deal: the pattern starts by stating that gauge is not important for this shrug. I’m thinking “RIGHT ON”, this is my kind of deal. I don’t even have to crochet a swatch before getting started (I hate having to do a beginning swatch, I’m so impatient). The pattern calls for a size P or 9mm hook so you can work this up in just a few hours. Being the rebel that I am, I decided to live on the edge and opted for a size J or 6mm hook instead with Bernat’s 100% cotton worsted weight yarn. I figure I’m looking at a little longer work time here.
Amazingly, I had no idea how versatile this pattern would be until I got started. I actually had the freedom to change things up a bit as I went along. I changed up the collar and the bottom just a tad, because that’s just what kind of mood I was in.
I finished this in a size medium (women’s size 6-8) in approximately 6 hours.

That looks really nice!!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute, I love it. Can you give the pattern number you used? I looked on the Etsy site you linked and didn't see anything like your piece. I'm still a novice at crochet, so maybe I don't see the obvious...
ReplyDeleteHi there, glad you like this.
ReplyDeleteIf you click on the words in the post that read "CUTE PATTERN AT HECTANOOGA ON ETSY", that will take you directly to the listed pattern. The pattern number is #375, and the name for it is "Pink Mesh Shrug".
Mine does look slightly different from the one on the pattern, because I altered the inside and the border by adding more rows of single crochet's, I left off the tie front closure, and used a smaller hook for the project. The pattern is so easily customizable so you can create your own style.
Oh, thanks for your fast response! Yes, I saw the pattern and was thrown off by the 'bolero' look, it didn't seem like the same pattern but now I see what you did. Great! Very, very nice! I am going to try it, too.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like maybe you lengthened it too...? I have a long torso and always need a couple more inches in length than standard styles. It's tricky to get something to look right.
Again, lovely work and I like the 'denim' look too, casual but pretty. Thanks!

You'll be surprised at how easily customizable this will be able to make this as long as you need it to be without any guesswork. I've been crocheting for 30 years now, but am new to reading and writing patterns. Hectanooga patterns are a terrific and easy way to become comfortable with patterns.
ReplyDeleteHave fun with your project. Would love to see pictures. If you are a member of the free Ravelry.com website, please look me up. My ID is CharacterCrochet
I'll look for you on Ravelry, thanks. It will be a while before I get to do this project--many Xmas projects lined up to do first and time is passing rapidly! If I get brave enough I'll post pics. :-)
